rwandan genocide
In 1994, prior to the Rwandan Genocide, Rwanda was made up of 85% Hutu and 14% Tutsi ethnic population. However, due to the increasing social, economic, and political pressures, Hutu extremists blamed the entire Tutsi population for these problems. Then, the bubble burst as on April 6, 1994, a plane carrying President Habyarimana, who was a Hutu, was shot down. Hutus then launched a nationwide operation and war aiming to kill at Tutsi minorities. Women were raped, families were killed in homes, and even Hutus who opposed the war were killed. The war only ended when the Tutsi-dominated rebel group, the RPF, defeated the Hutu perpetrator regime and President Paul Kagame took control. In the course of just 100 days from the beginning to the end of the genocide, an estimated 1 million people died, which was one seventh of the entire Rwandan population.
